National Consultation for Disaster Risk Reduction-May 2022
With an aim to assess and discuss the progress on the implementation of the Sendai Framework for Disaster Risk Reduction (SFDRR), the seventh Global Platform for Disaster Risk Reduction (GPDRR) was held in Bali, Indonesia, from May 23 to May 28. Prior to the global event, Sphere India in collaboration with the National Institute of Disaster Management (Ministry of Home Affairs, Government of India) organized a National Consultation for Disaster Risk Reduction on 20th May 2022. During the discussions, over 100 participants, expert panellists from the government, UN, INGOs, national NGOs, and grassroots organizations shared their challenges, learning, and recommendations on Disaster Risk Governance, DRR Financing, and Inclusion. The panellists also discussed some of the pressing challenges towards achieving the SFDRR goals and suggested the way forward on the basis of their expertise and scope.
National-level Workshop on Mainstreaming Animal Issues in DRR-June 2022
Sphere Indian joining hands with Policy Perspectives Foundation organised a national-level workshop on 'Mainstreaming Animal Issues in Disaster Risk Reduction' at the India International Centre, New Delhi, on June 22. Experts from central and state governments, NGOs, and academia deliberated on how animal issues can be mainstreamed in DRR at the workshop organised under the aegis of the Ministry of Animal Husbandry, National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), and Veterinary Council of India. As many as 300 participants took part in the workshop where panelists underscored the necessity to give appropriate attention to the issues relating to animals in disasters. They shed light on the fact that the Disaster Management Act, 2005, despite being a very comprehensive Act, has failed to mention both domestic and wild animals.
JRNA Report on Heatwave Situation in North Indian States-May 2022
As per IMD, March 2022 was the hottest month in the last 122 years. Mitigating the impact of searing heat has become a pressing challenge. In response to the frequent heatwave, Sphere India along with the support from partners and local organizations, conducted a Joint Rapid Needs Assessment (JRNA) across six states of India in the month of April 2022. The worst-hit areas of Delhi, UP, Haryana, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, and Rajasthan were covered in the survey. The JRNA report paints a clear picture of the impact caused by the heatwaves and the recommendations that can be adopted as a mitigating action for future calamities.
Joint Rapid Need Assessment Heavy Rainfall & Urban Floods-May 2022
Heavy downpour in Bengaluru on 17th May night, which continued till the wee hours of the next day, left many pockets of the IT capital inundated. The massive floods claimed human lives, destroyed properties, and pushed 12 million-odd residents of the city to a state of despair. In response to the urban floods, Sphere India taking support from partners and member organizations conducted a Joint Rapid Needs Assessment (JRNA). The JRNA report provides a better understanding of the impact of floods on people’s lives and their recovery needs.
